The One With Olympic Embarrassment

Yup, still on Olympic. I got this source from Washington post.

"THE PRACTICE of sport is a human right." So proudly affirms the International Olympic Committee in Principle 4 of the "Fundamental Principles of Olympism." "Every individual must have the possibility of practising sport, without discrimination of any kind and in the Olympic spirit." And Principle 5 makes explicit that discrimination based on gender "is incompatible with belonging to the Olympic Movement." So what is an all-male Saudi team doing in Beijing?

" It's not as if there are no women from majority-Muslim countries competing in the Beijing Games. As Mona Eltahawy pointed out in an opinion piece last week, Algeria, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates have women on their teams. In fact, Bahrain and the UAE even allowed women to carry their national flags. So the problem is not Islam but clerics and weak-willed potentates who would twist the Koran to stunt the skills and abilities of women who would love to compete against the world's best athletes. Brunei is the other Muslim country that does not allow women to play sports.

The IOC talks a good game about wanting women to participate in sports and compete in the Olympics. Its Web site has multiple tabs championing women in sports. But Ms. Eltahawy was right about how the IOC could show that it means what it says. "If Saudi Arabia won't put women on the team," she wrote, "then tell them not to bother showing up at the London Olympics in 2012." We agree. If the IOC develops a backbone and puts some power behind its lofty words, it will do just that.

I am from Brunei and that is not true. I am embarrassed that Brunei was excluded from the 2008 Olympics, due to whatever reason. But prior to that we actually had a woman set to compete in swimming.
I wonder where the author obtained his resources, but Brunei despite being a malay muslim monarchy allows women to play sports. I have seen women jog, swim, some cycle, play badminton, tennis, play hockey, and a few play soccer. Although I have to admit that certain sports have not been taken up by the female gender such as rugby or soft/baseball.

The One With No Time For Goodbye

It was one of the saddest days in one's life. This week, I've lost two incredible lives. Well, except for the other one. It was shocking to know two lives have been taken in a span of 2 days. Awful. So awful. Why bad things happen to good people? *tsk tsk* Why? Whyyyyyyy? Ehhh.. Obba I... si dai tu punya pasal.. but still, the two lives are gone. The rabbit and the chicken are GONEEEE!!!

R.I.P si rabbit.

Bunga mencabut dirinya dari tanah

Pasu tebalik sendirinya

Bunga pun jadi layu

Si kucing temanung2.

The One Where Brunei Is Expelled

I was sitting on the couch, watching a very colourful performance for the opening ceremony of the greatest show on earth. Suddenly, the TV live commentators talked about Brunei exclusion from the Olympic and I was like "WHAT?". Still furious, I ran up to my room, thinking what could have happened for Brunei being expelled from the games. Forgot to register? Huh..

For those of you yang nda pandai kan membaca newspaper setiap hari, I clip clip some some for you.

The Beijing Olympic Games started off with a 'bang' with the participation of 204 countries albeit in the conspicuous absence of Brunei which was excluded by the International Olympic Committee for failing to register any athletes.

In light of the non-participation of any Brunei athlete and contingent, the IOC, following the common policy of the Olympic Charter, removed all Brunei flags from the Olympic venue. Local sports fans, surprised by the decision, have called the Bulletin seeking clarification. The consensus was it was an embarrassing episode for the country. Lokman, a teacher, told the Sunday Bulletin it was a big surprise for many. "Despite the four-year gap after the last Olympics, there should be ample time for any preparation or in this case the registration for the participants," he said. "The whole thing is an embarrassment for the country with millions of people knowing about it," he added.

The One With Orientation Week

Finally!!! It's Over!!! Yayy!! No more sitting for hours listening to the slightly boring briefing. I'm just going to list what happened during the second and final day of orientation. Not to forget, the UBD Orientation Challenge.

Orientation : Day 2
- Came late around 7.30 and Kera stole my parking. I had to park far away from 'it'.
- First event was the Library briefing and workshop. Useful but the presentation was boring.
- Break. Curry puff and Kelupis. Nyamannn~

- Library tour was fun because no kera. I really had fun climbing the stairs to third floor.

- Lunch. Sweet and sour chicken and daging. The girls had hot dog :(
- MIB briefing was ok but towards the end, I almost ZzZzZzZ
- Briefing by language centre, nda pemahamnan I, mcm laju.
- Break. Sandwich = Yummy but still Hot to the max tea and nescafe :(
- Briefing on administration, academic and examination was so boring. I don't think everybody was listening. They should add something like jokes etc to attract everybody's attention. Not a serious one. Just simply reading and explain like what yang tertera on the manuscript.
- Go home!!

UBD Orientation Challenge 2008
- I'm one of the Selungsongs (Green house)
- Warm up was okay but the aerobic was funny. More dancing than the actual aerobic. Funny though!!
- The challenge was great. Tiring but I had fun. Even though we only managed to get 8 stamps out of 20 but we attempted 10 challenges and failed 2 of them. It's okay if we didn't win because if you read the ultimate guide on the paper given to you, no 31 states that the priority is to smile and have fun. Nyeh~
- It was a successful event.

Orientation : Final Day

- This is when I get to know who are the other 65 taking the same course as mine.
- The code for the courses are confusing because there are so many clashes between chemistry and english.
- For the first time, breakfast was splendid!!
- Online registration was awful-awful. So slow and the afternoon briefing had to be called off.
- No lunch provided, had to eat at Giant.
- Finally, Syukur~ Syukur~ Syukur Alhamdullilah, the week long orientation is finally over. :D

That night, I went to Adib's for Doa selamat. Alhamdullilah, the event went well and we had a lot of fun talking, laughing and scaring our heads off.

- Si Dai mengugurkan ikan warna hitam.
- Ada si buntal yang bari kan mengkubit.
- Ada ice cream nyaman.
- Bubus-bubusan jua ada.
- Kalibij
